Why more couples are renewing their vows

Couple renewing their vows

In recent years, an increasing number of couples across the UK have been choosing to renew their vows. But why is this tradition gaining in popularity?

As a celebrant, I’ve seen first-hand just how meaningful these occasions can be; how couples make them their own; and how incredibly moving it is when two people look each other in the eye and say, ‘I choose you!’ all over again. But let’s have a look at some of the reasons vow renewals are on the rise.

Celebrating milestones

A vow renewal is often linked to a milestone anniversary: 10, 25 or 50 years together for example. Many more couples have begun using their anniversaries as an opportunity to pause, gather loved ones, and reflect on the journey so far – to celebrate their achievements, their memories, and their enduring love.

A fresh chapter

Life isn’t always straightforward, and many couples see a vow renewal as the perfect way to mark a fresh start. Overcoming challenges, navigating big changes, or coming through a difficult time together often deepens a bond. A renewal ceremony acknowledges that strength and looks to the future with hope.

Family involvement

When couples married young or kept their wedding small, they sometimes missed the chance to share the day with family and friends. A renewal provides the perfect opportunity to involve children, grandchildren, or close friends in the celebration. Whether that’s through readings, music, or simply being present, it becomes a collective memory for everyone involved.

Making up for what was missed

Not every couple had the wedding of their dreams. Maybe it was too rushed, limited by budget, or even held during lockdown restrictions. A vow renewal is a wonderful way to create the celebration they always wanted, surrounded by the people who matter most.

The celebrant difference

Whether you’re marking an anniversary, celebrating resilience, or simply wanting to say ‘I do’ again, a vow renewal is a powerful and joyful way to honour your story. Unlike a legal wedding, there are no restrictions. You don’t need a licensed venue, and there’s no prescribed format. You can hold your ceremony anywhere that feels special, and the ceremony can be intimate, fun, heartfelt, or all three.

As your celebrant, I’d be delighted to help you craft a ceremony that is warm, meaningful, and unforgettable. Please get in touch!
